This darling family of 15 was an absolute dream to photograph! I love extended family photo sessions, and this beautiful evening at Oak Grove Park in Ripon is exactly why. There is something so meaningful about bringing generations together and capturing the relationships that make a family unique.
Jon and Kristin have created such a loving, close-knit family. Their oldest son is now married with two children of his own, while Kristin recently welcomed their ninth baby. That means their family is growing in every direction, and it was such a privilege to document this season for them.
From the moment we began, I could see how deeply this family cares for one another. Their interactions were full of support, teasing, laughter, and genuine affection. The older children were so sweet with the little ones, and everyone jumped in to help create smiles and keep the energy light. Those natural moments are always some of my favorite images from an extended family photo shoot.
Jon and Kristin’s love for each other was also beautiful to witness. Throughout the session, they would steal little glances at one another while cheering on their kids and enjoying the chaos around them. We stepped aside for a few minutes to capture portraits of just the two of them, and those images felt especially meaningful. Their family may be growing, but their story still begins with the love they share.
Of course, the kids had plenty of opportunities to shine too. There was laughing, teasing, cuddling, and lots of tickling the little ones to encourage a smile. I loved photographing the siblings together and watching their personalities come through. Some were ready for the camera, while others were happiest interacting with the people they love. Both kinds of moments deserve to be remembered.
Oak Grove Park was the perfect location for this Ripon family photography session. The large trees, dry summer grass, and golden-hour sunlight created a warm, natural backdrop. Their soft color palette of cream, sage, blush, blue, tan, and denim coordinated beautifully with the scenery without feeling overly matched.
Everyone arrived ready to go, which made this large family session feel relaxed and fun from beginning to end. We captured the full group, smaller family units, sibling photos, couple portraits, and plenty of candid connection along the way.
That is what family photography is all about to me. It is not only about getting everyone to look at the camera. It is about preserving the laughter, affection, movement, and relationships that make a family feel like home.
