Fall Magic in Logan Canyon: A Heartfelt Family Session

This past fall, I had the joy of serving as the second shooter during a truly breathtaking family session in Logan, Utah. The timing couldn’t have been more perfect—golden hour collided with peak fall foliage, painting the canyon in vibrant reds, glowing oranges, and rich golden yellows. With the mountains towering around us and the soft canyon breeze weaving through the trees, it felt like we had stepped straight into a dream.

But what made this session unforgettable wasn’t just the scenery—it was this beautiful family of six who brought it to life. Two loving parents and their four spirited, adventurous kids filled the canyon with laughter, movement, and love. From the moment they arrived, the energy was contagious. What could have been a posed session felt more like a joyful celebration of family.

There was leaf-tossing, shoulder rides, giggles that echoed through the trees, and spontaneous moments that required no direction. It was the kind of session where everything unfolded naturally, and every corner of the canyon held a new burst of life and connection.

As the second shooter for this session, I had the privilege of stepping back and capturing the in-between moments—the kind that often go unnoticed but say everything. A dad gently reaching for his toddler’s hand. A mom’s eyes crinkling with laughter as her children played around her. Tiny fingers curled around crunchy autumn leaves. Those quiet, unscripted frames are the heartbeat of storytelling family photography, and they’re the ones I always come back to.

Logan Canyon in the fall is a dream location for any family photographer, especially for this traveling photographer. The landscape offers an ever-changing palette of color, light, and texture that perfectly complements the authentic emotion that family sessions bring. But more than anything, it’s a place that invites families to let go—to play, to laugh, to breathe—and that makes all the difference.

Every family brings their own rhythm and story, and this one brought warmth, connection, and a whole lot of joy. Watching their personalities shine individually and as a unit reminded me why I love this work so much: it’s not about perfect poses. It’s about love. Real, raw, beautiful love that you can feel in a photograph.

A huge thank you to BreAnne Weston for inviting me to be part of this session and for sharing her gift behind the camera. It was an honor to learn from her and to contribute to capturing such a meaningful afternoon.
